Hourly ↔ Salary Calculator
Convert an hourly wage into an annual salary, or a salary into its hourly equivalent, using your real hours per week and weeks per year — unpaid weeks included in the arithmetic.
The same pay, two dialects
Job ads speak annual; hourly workers live hourly; offers arrive in whichever dialect makes them look larger. The conversion is simple multiplication with two honest knobs — hours per week and weeks actually worked per year — and those knobs are where the flattering versions cheat.
Annual = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year · Hourly = annual ÷ (hours × weeks)
Example: $25 an hour at 40 hours for 52 weeks is $52,000 a year. Take two unpaid weeks and the same wage pays $50,000 — a $2,000 fact hidden inside the 'weeks' field that the standard ×2,080-hours shortcut cannot show.
Gross is the shared fiction
Both directions here are pre-tax, pre-benefit. Comparing a salary to self-employment income needs a further margin — the contractor must fund the employer-side taxes, insurance and unpaid gaps the salary silently covers; a 20–30% premium over the salaried hourly equivalent is a common starting adjustment, not a verdict.
How this is calculated
Annual = hourly × weekly hours × yearly weeks; inverse divides. Averages for monthly figures divide the annual by 12. No tax, overtime premium or benefit valuation is applied — overtime, where relevant, is best modeled by adjusting the hours or the effective rate, and the page says so rather than guessing your jurisdiction's rules.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the '× 2,080 hours' shortcut come from?
40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 — the full-time, no-unpaid-leave year. It is the government and corporate default, and it is wrong for anyone with unpaid weeks, which is why this page exposes the weeks.
How do I compare a salary offer to my hourly job?
Convert both to the same side, then adjust for what differs: paid leave, employer retirement match, health premiums and payroll-tax share all carry percentages. The raw conversion is step one, not the answer.
Does overtime change the annual figure?
At time-and-a-half, five overtime hours a week add the equivalent of 7.5 straight hours — re-run with an effective hours figure (47.5) or a blended rate. Seasonal overtime should be averaged honestly, not best-month annualised.
Salaried but working 55 hours — what's my real hourly?
Divide by the hours actually worked: a $70,000 salary at a real 55-hour week is $24.47 an hour, not the $33.65 of the 40-hour fiction. The form's hours field exists for exactly this discomfort.
